During World War I, Harry Lambert, a shy and gentle baker, finds himself thrown into the front line on the Western Front. Watching his mates die around him, Harry can’t bear the thought of dying before he has known love and walks from the battlefield. Wounded and wretched, Harry ends up in unfamiliar countryside that’s swarming with gendarme on the look-out for deserters. He barely avoids capture when a local, Colombe Jacotot, shelter him from the authorities. Colombe has also faced the horrors of war, from the death of her son to her husband abandoning her. She speaks no English, nor does Harry speak French.
